Pro golfer comes out; on TV they're kissing on the greens

by John Graves

Lesbian and gay golf fans have a new incentive to watch the sport on television this year as one of the Ladies Professional Golf Association golfers, Muffin SpencerDevlin, has come all the way out of the closet in an article entitled "No More Disguises" in the March 18 Sports Illustrated.

In the article, Spencer-Devlin says, "Coming out is like an incredibly huge weight being lifted from my shoulders. No more living in shadows. No more lies." SpencerDevlin goes on in the article to say that the reason she decided to come out was her

impending marriage to musician-composer Lynda Roth in May. Spencer-Devlin then went on to speak of her reaction when she saw a rainbow in the sky near her Catalina home: "The rainbow is a symbol for gays and lesbians. All over the country, people put rainbow signs in store windows and hang rainbow flags on their houses. But you know, I'd never thought about why we claim rainbows for a totem. To create a rainbow, first you have to have rain. Then you need light. When you're out and ready to fly the rainbow flag, you're ready to shine a bright light on yourself."

Hope you caught the premiere episode of Tracey Ullman's new comedy series, Tracey Takes On, on HBO a few weeks ago. In the first show, Ullman portrayed Chris Walker, a lesbian masquerading as the personal nutritionist of her lover, a pro golfer played by Julie Kavner. The ending of the skit was what we've always been waiting to see at a LPGA tournament when the two lovers, and all of the other same-sex couples in the tournament, embrace in celebration and give each other a passionate kiss on the lips.

Another, recurring gay character in the series is Trevor, a gay flight attendant. In an Associated Press report, Ullman said of her gay roles, "I have a wonderful homosexual fan base and I love them." You can catch her original mid-1980s series, the Tracey Ullman Show, now in reruns on Comedy Central, Monday through Friday at 11 am and 6:30 pm. Ullman portrayed Francesca, the teenage daughter of gay parents in a frequently recurring sketch in the original series.

Don't forget to catch the live coverage of the Wimbeldon tennis championship matches on HBO this year. A few weeks ago, HBO announced that recently retired, out lesbian tennis star Martina Navratilova will be joined by bisexual tennis legend Billie Jean King and former ESPN sportscaster Mary Carillo to become the first allwoman team to cover men's tennis.

An ambitious bank executive who earns extra money as a part-time prostitute falls in love with the wife of her client, a psychotic drug dealer, in the 1995 film Wild Side now playing on HBO. Very gay-positive ending on this one! The two lovers,

portrayed by Anne Heche and Joan Chen, join forces to escape from the psychotic criminal husband and the sexist undercover cop who have exploited them. The last line of the film as the two women head off into the sunset is, "At last I am entering the 'third world' where I always knew I belonged."

Outrageous and controversial performance artist Annie Sprinkle talks about her own life and work and interviews the women in the sex industry chosen to be part of her latest art project in the allwoman documentary, Real Sex: Wild Cards, which has been airing on HBO.

A woman's cinema-verité account of her father's battle with AIDS is the debut program in another HBO documentary, Family Video Diaries, a new series that will focus on how families cope with crisis.

Ballot Measure Nine, the documentary about how the lesbian and gay community successfully rallied to defeat a ballot proposal for an anti-gay amendment to the Oregon constitution, has begun airing on Cinemax.

The January issue of The Progressive featured an article about COLAGE, Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere, a peer support group for children of lesbian and gay parents. COLAGE publishes two teen newsletters which include pre-teen pages. One of the COLAGE newsletters is directed to gay children of gay parents. COLAGE also does media liaison, sponsors theatrical productions, produces educational videos and provides fact sheets and testimony in child custody cases.
